The UK Chronicles is a photographic exploration of Northumberland, captured through the lens of a single camera setup. Using only my Fujifilm X100F with its fixed lens, I took on the challenge of creating a compelling visual narrative with minimal gear. This project was as much about embracing simplicity as it was about capturing the essence of this remarkable region.
During this journey, one of the standout experiences was visiting Bamburgh Castle, an iconic landmark overlooking the coast. The castle’s imposing presence and the surrounding beaches provided a wealth of photographic opportunities, and working with just the X100F pushed me to focus on the subtleties of composition and light.
The inland moors offered a different kind of beauty, characterised by their vast, open spaces and tranquil atmosphere. With only a single lens, I aimed to capture the essence of the moors’ expansive serenity, emphasising the rolling hills and quiet landscapes.
A notable highlight of the journey was Hadrian’s Wall. This ancient fortification, weaving through the Northumbrian landscape, added a historical depth to the series. Photographing such a monumental site with minimal gear provided a unique perspective and a deeper connection to the history and nature surrounding the wall.
In addition to these grand sites, the charming villages of Northumberland exuded a delightful “Miss Marple” feeling — picturesque and quaint, with a sense of timelessness that evokes classic British charm, albeit without any of the murders. These villages, with their charming streets and cosy atmosphere, added a unique layer to the project, showcasing the more intimate, everyday beauty of the region.
The UK Chronicles is not just a collection of images; it’s a testament to how constraints can inspire creativity. I hope these photographs convey both the grand and subtle beauty of Northumberland and invite you to experience it through the simple yet profound perspective of the Fujifilm X100F.
